Pieter Wijnstekers

Translation by May Jarvie:

Continental Records has picked up these independently produced roots CDs. The fact that they are strong renditions of Americana pretty well speaks for itself – in the category of “Americana” there is so much new talent that a recording company can pick and choose. Both of these albums don’t just place their lead performers in the spotlight, but also the Canadian producer who they share: Hugh Christopher Brown, who himself, as Chris Brown boasts a significant discography as a singer/ songwriter.

Also, David Corley and Suzanne Jarvie have not just appeared on the scene, despite the fact that both of them are putting forth their debut albums later in life. Both have experienced serious health issues (Corley who underwent a heart operation; and for Suzanne, the almost fatal accident which occurred when her oldest son fell down the stairs) which made it very clear that you should not put off striving to bring your passions to fruition – because life can come to an end just like that! Corley creates a smoking hypothermic kind of somber roots rock sound, reminiscent of Chip Taylor and/or Tony Joe White, but with more variety.

Jarvie follows more of a typical alt. country style. With the combination of her finely experienced  occasionally somewhat Emmy Lou Harris like voice, and the powerful songs which she has written herself, produced by Brown and perfectly clad in musical “attire” (jackets) Spiral Road has a lovely lightness which never becomes superficial.

The albums are very different but will find their own audience without much difficulty. – Pieter Wijnstekers
